Robert is a Research Associate and Director of Center for Couples in Recovery and directs the Recovery Forum at MRI. Course Description:

The dreaded statement for many couple therapists are the countless variations of, “My partner drinks/uses too much”. Couple therapists are often at a loss at how to assess for and treat the couple when one or both partners struggle with an addiction. Sometimes concerns are raised by one of the partners about alcohol - and other possible dependencies - but often addictions remain hidden. How do you incorporate addiction assessment within couple therapy? What role should the therapist play once there is evidence of an addiction? Should you even see the couple if there is an addiction? How does addiction interplay with other couple issues? What goals are appropriate given normal developmental processes identified in active use, early recovery, and ongoing recovery?
